BANGKOK — A Thai political party that nominated the sister of Thailand’s king as its candidate for prime minister was dissolved on Thursday by the constitutional court for “hostile action” against the nation’s political system and constitutional monarchy.
Under Thai law, members of the royal family are considered above politics. Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Varnavadi, 67, the elder sister of King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun, was born a princess but gave up her royal titles when she married an American in 1972.
Nevertheless, within hours of Ms. Ubolratana’s nomination by the Thai Raksa Chart Party last month, King Vajiralongkorn, 66, deemed her candidacy “inappropriate,” effectively ending her brief political career.
“Involvement of a high-ranking member of the royal family in politics, in any way, is against the nation’s traditions, customs and culture and is therefore considered improper and highly inappropriate,” the king said in a royal communiqué on Feb. 8.
The constitutional court judges on Thursday repeatedly emphasized that the monarchy was above politics and that any taking of sides in politics would affect the neutrality of the royal institution.
“The action also made Thai people feel that the monarchy, which is the heart of the Thai people, was brought down and used in a political game,” said Taweekiet Meenakanit, one of the nine judges.
To prevent political violence from spreading on the streets of Bangkok, as has happened with regularity for decades, 1,200 police officers were deployed around the constitutional court on Thursday. Signs on barricades warned that protesters could face six months in prison.
Supporters of the party wept when they heard the court’s judgment.
With Thai Raksa Chart’s dissolution, the party’s top executives are barred from setting up new political parties for 10 years, and its more than 280 candidates are not eligible to participate in national elections scheduled for March 24.
“I am devastated by the decision,” said Preechapol Pongpanich, the leader of Thai Raksa Chart. “The disruption of the political party has affected basic political rights and freedoms.”
He added: “Our party, although only short-lived for four months, received a lot of kindness from the people. We want to do good for the country, and we have pure intentions.”
Human rights groups were quick to condemn the court’s unanimous judgment.
“This decision highlights the Thai authorities’ abuse of judicial powers to restrict the peaceful association and expression of the political opposition,” Katherine Gerson, Amnesty International’s Thailand campaigner, said in a statement.
Thailand has been ruled by a military junta since a coup in 2014, which unseated forces loyal to the Shinawatra family that had dominated politics for nearly two decades. Thai Raksa Chart, whose name means “Thai Save the Nation,” was one of several parties linked to the Shinawatras running in the coming elections.
Prayuth Chan-ocha, a former general and chief of the junta that masterminded the coup, was later named prime minister of Thailand by a rubber-stamp legislature. He is running for prime minister as the candidate for the Palang Pracharat Party, which is considered a proxy for a military that has engineered 12 successful coups since 1932.
Political polling, though often unreliable in Thailand, puts the military-linked party well behind Pheu Thai, the main political vehicle for the Shinawatra family.
Although Thailand is proceeding with the rituals of democracy — competing campaign posters on the streets, a transgender candidate for prime minister and a party whose platform focuses on the promotion of marijuana — the elections this month are much diminished.
A constitution drafted under military rule gives Parliament the power to choose the prime minister, including people who are not elected members of Parliament, like Mr. Prayuth. The Senate will be appointed by the military rather than chosen by the electorate, which includes more than seven million first-time voters.
Since Thaksin Shinawatra, a billionaire from Thailand’s north, burst onto the political scene as prime minister in 2001, parties aligned to him have won every election. Both Mr. Thaksin and his sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, who also served as prime minister, now live in overseas exile after corruption-linked convictions in absentia.
Mr. Thaksin was unseated in a 2006 coup, amid whispers that he was building a power base that challenged the authority of Thailand’s monarchy and political forces close to it.
Thailand has some of the world’s strictest lèse-majesté laws, criminalizing insults to the monarchy. During the turbulent hours in which Ms. Ubolratana’s candidacy was announced and then scorned last month, many Thai political analysts declined to comment on the unfolding political drama.
Political activists and commentators have also been charged for other reasons.
Last year, Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, the young leader of the Future Forward Party and a vocal critic of military rule, was accused of violating the Computer Crime Act, which penalizes the sharing of fake news and is considered a blunt political instrument by human rights groups.
This month, the police filed a complaint against Pongsakorn Rodchompoo, a deputy leader of Future Forward, accusing him of contravening the same act.
The fate of both politicians will be decided after the election.B:
